Ontario Premier Threatens to Cut Power to 1.5 Million U.S. Customers Over Trump’s New Tariffs
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has issued a strong warning to the U.S., stating he may shut off power to 1.5 million U.S. customers in response to President Donald Trump’s new tariffs.
In January, President Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports and 10% on Canadian energy as part of his effort to hold Canada, Mexico, and China accountable for illegal drug trafficking and border issues. Trump has even suggested that Canada’s only option to avoid the tariffs is to become the U.S.’s “51st state”.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the move, stressing that there is no justification for the tariffs, which he called an unfair attack on Canada.
Ford, however, is prepared to retaliate by cutting off energy to the U.S., emphasizing that Ontario provides power to millions of U.S. customers, including those in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. He stated, “If they want to destroy our economy and families, I will shut down the electricity going into the U.S.”
Ford has made it clear that Ontario will fight back hard against the tariffs, with full support from the provinces despite federal leadership on the issue.
